"editing a task?" Do you mean writing your own? It depends on what you want to do. Redirectors were created to (1) make it possible to declare the I/O handling of your task separately from the task itself (they are ref/reusable); and (2) specifically to allow mapped output destinations in the case of e.g. <apply>.
