My bad. Apparently I received some bogus information from a co-worker - he said that this form of truncation would cause the class loader to miss those jars whose names were split across lines in the manifest during class path processing. However, this seems to have only been a problem on SCO Unix (not sure which version) and probably only on jdk1.3xxx. I tested this with 1.4.2 on windoze and it worked fine. Sorry.
