Why is the current output into System.out a problem for you? If I move this to project.log it would have two consequences. One would be to generate a log event prior to the buildStarted event for all of the listsners. There are no strict guarantees there, IIRC, but it would certainly affect some listeners. The XML logger, for example, would probably fail with a NPE accessing buildElement which is constructed in the buildStarted event The other consequence is that this particular output would be included in any log file created with -logfile and nothing would appear on the console for command line users.
