The writable attribute got added in MSVSSCHECKOUT.java version 1.16, 2003/04/15 04:26:51 ant 1.5.3 has this revision of MSVSSCHECKOUT.java : 1.8.2.3 , Mon Feb 10 14:25: 20 2003 If you need the writable attribute, then you need ant1.6alpha. Otherwise, the real problem is probably : why does your vsscheckout hang for ever ? Do you have ss.exe in your path ? Are all your Visual Source Safe parameters set up OK. I am closing this bug as WONTFIX (because there might not be other ant versions in the ant 1.5 branch after ant 1.5.3). If you have more problems with the Visual Source Safe tasks, please discuss them on the user list before filling in a new bug report.
