I don't think I like either the idea of of what you describe nor the
implementation.  I'd probably prefer a simple include without any
target overrides then.

Let's say I'm -0 on the feature as such and consequently won't stand
in the way of any implementation details with further questions.

Then you don't want to import the target but a different target IMHO.
