Hello all, I am reaching out to you on behalf of the Maps for HTML Community Group, the W3C and the OGC. We would like to draw your attention to our upcoming Workshop on standardizing maps for the Web.[1] The workshop will take place via daily video presentations (max 1 hour each), September 21 through October 2. Follow-up discussions will be hosted on the WICG Discourse discussion forum.[2]
The workshop’s Call For Participation is open now. The deadline for talk, panel, and hack/demo session proposals has been extended until Wednesday July 15. Registration & written position statements will be open until September 1. So far, we have a lot of interest from the geospatial community, along with some great submissions from people working to make maps & geospatial data more widely accessible. But we don't have many participants with deep knowledge of building browsers, and the related security, performance, accessibility, and internationalization concerns. So we're reaching out to the browser developer communities directly via this list — apologies if this is the wrong mailing list for this type of announcement, or if you received this message multiple times on multiple lists. Expected workshop topics include, but aren’t limited to: - Best practices for web map UIs, particularly accessibility & internationalization - Best practices for web map APIs, particularly performance & integration with other website components/frameworks - Designing a native map viewer for the Web platform (similar to HTML <video> for embedding video content) - Standardizing web-optimized data formats & server APIs for sharing map content - Protecting user privacy & data security while supporting more personalizable, location-aware web content Leading up to the workshop, we also welcome suggestions & contributions to the Use Cases and Requirements for Web Maps report [3] , which reviews existing web map frameworks for common capabilities & patterns, and tries to identify areas of overlap with other web platform features or proposals. I know this is late notice for the talk proposals call for participation. Please submit even a rough proposal if you're interested & the programming committee can work with you to refine it as we finalize our schedule.
