I think I'll try option 1... I have an old Surface Pro running Ubuntu which I can use as the scheduler. It's probably too underpowered to be helpful in compiling... but you never know - every CPU helps, I guess... even at 1GHz. Then I've got a couple of old (2014) MacBook Pros to throw into the mix, which, together with my 2018 MacBook Pro should get me to around 20+ CPUs.
