My personal conclusion was that not only does Microformats appear to be used less widely than other competing formats, but that from a technical point of view just adding "h-" prefixes to class names seems like a massive hack. Many of the arguments I've heard in favour of Microformats are that it's the "grassroots" or "non-evil" solution. It's equally true that not being a W3C recommendation doesn't automatically make something better either. But I'm not the person that will have to implement this, and the people who are think we should use Microformats.
