Interesting observation. ISTM that that's a bug in HTTPS. At least I don't see an obvious security reason for the behavior to be that way. More generally: I expect that this process will turn up bugs in HTTPS behavior, either "actual" bugs in terms of implementation errors, or "logical" bugs where the intended behavior does not meet the expectations or needs of websites.
