A touch event or mouseclick-and-hold on the eye icon could show the
password, and as soon as the user releases the password can go back to
being obfuscated. That would prevent accidental leakage through screen
sharing. The tricky part is adding such an icon next to the password
field (same issue with adding the show passwords checkbox).
This suggestion suits desktop, but on mobile, press-and-hold on the password field forces the user to keep the finger at least partially over the password field which hinders readability.

If the password overflows, the touch-and-hold approach hinders panning.

From the user experience, showing the password optionally while entering is superior because typos can be fixed immediately. Showing the password after it has been entered and e.g. rejected, the user has to spot the issue and set the cursor to the problematic part of the password.

In the longterm, modifying the screensharing API to not show the contents of login forms would improve security.
