After much work and frustration, I finally was able to get the updates working...
Issue was related to brand.properties file. be careful while creating brand.properties and brand.dtd files.Some utf editors will add a byte order mark(BOM) character, and this will cause errors within XUL runners stringbundle functions that are used in the update process.
