This, not unfamiliarity to new developers, is the big issue. Developers have to learn new APIs all the time. STL versus something else shouldn't be that much of a stumbling block. Its being literally impossible to learn our string API by reading coherent documentation in a single header is a much bigger problem than our having our own string API. Don't let patches land without coherent documentation!
