Alternatively, you can just open up a debugging session to the System app
and call navigator.mozApps.installPackage('
https://example.com/update.webapp');

Or do what Fabrice did with his example conversions (
https://people.mozilla.org/~fdesre/extensions/) and add a button to your
addon's webpage that runs the above command. :)

PS: Sorry for taking a few days to get a patch in the queue for WebIDE. If
it lands, it will be my first real contribution to mozilla-central. Turns
out there's a bit of a learning curve associated with that. :)
