Marking this as fixed. With recent updates, it needed a reboot which disabled
unity (it's plugin was disabled in ccsm).
Imported the backup .profile file on user account and since then unable to
reproduce a firefox freeze by playing with appmenu.

Bug description:
Recent updates of unity and hud break performance.
Reproducable.
Firefox in full screen mode. Move the mouse cursor over the menus fast, click
here and there a menu entry.
Firefox becomes unresponsive due to increase of memory usage from hud- and
unity-service.
It takes about 2:50 minutes until firefox is responsive again. (video)
The video also reveals that bug 933615 is back.
