gnome-shell consumes pc while doing nothing

Bug description:
Running Ubuntu as a client in VmWare Workstation. Other OS'es work
fine, but the keystroke response is about a second making it hopeless
to work with.
It seems like it has something to do with the Intel HD Graphics 630
controller where 3D is constantly running at 20%
