Ubuntu 16.04 (xenial) reached end-of-standard-support on April 29, 2021. Reporter says in comment #5 that issue has been fixed. Sorry Mike, for not acknowledging your comment until now. I'm closing this now as being fixed as there have been no further comments for over five years now.

The graphics start to render incorrectly and eventually the system will crash. Once this problem starts it can be stopped by switching to TTY1 and back to 7. I experience many of the following errors in dmesg every second until I swap TTY.
