Please open the Extensions app and disable any non-Ubuntu extensions.
Please also run:

  cd ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/
  rm -rf extensions

and then log in again.

If the problem still happens then run:

  gsettings list-recursively org.gnome.shell > settings.txt

and attach the resulting text file here.

  I leave my computer running for days at a time. I noticed that gnome-
  shell was using something like 8-gigs of memory. I just kill the
  process on a regular basis.
