This seems to have been fixed before final release of 11.10.

Status in “gnome-power-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  At least since alpha 1, the battery indicator has been missing.  I of
  course, do have a working battery and can see its status in system
  settings -> power.
