I also have been encountering this issue. It's happened a few times now - it only happens after my machine has been up for a while.
I start to notice it when alt-tab takes a substantial proportion of a second to switch between windows. gnome-shell seems to be taking quite a bit of CPU time (10% to 30% cpu), but that's possibly just normal. I do have a network mount of a NAS drive, but it doesn't appear to be being probed (I would hear the NAS box spin up). I've attached the result of running the following commands: lspci -k > lspcik.txt gsettings list-recursively org.gnome.shell > settings.txt glxinfo > glxinfo.txt journalctl -b0 | tail -1000000 > journal.txt I see many Javascript type errors in the journal which might have something to do with the issue. As with the original poster, Alt-F2, then r fixed the issue (at least I have a workaround now!) and I don't see the regular JS errors appearing in the journal any more. ** Attachment added: "gnome.bug.zip" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1901017/+attachment/5452889/+files/gnome.bug.zip -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-shell in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1901017 Title: Desktop gradually increases response lag to clicks in 20.04 (Fixed by Alt+F2, "r")) Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu: Expired Bug description: After a day or so of uptime, system will grow quite sluggish to respond to mouse clicks. Clicking on an app in the dock with multiple windows will lag up to 1 second, clicking different windows will do the same. Curiously, right clicking on the desktop takes longer, sometimes over 2 seconds for the menu to appear. Clicking the Calendar/Notification area and other areas of the shell yield the same issue. Actual drawing performance does NOT seem to be affected, as browsing and in-application clicking is still snappy. Highlighting icons by hovering over the dock is also real-time. This has reliably occurred after more than a day of uptime on multiple occasions. My machine is a Ryzen 3600 with 32GB RAM and an NVIDIA 1050Ti (Proprietary driver) No unusually high CPU usage is found, nor is there anything that seems to be using very much RAM. Using Alt+F2 and "r" to restart mutter instantly restores responsiveness Current version of mutter is 3.36.6 --- ProblemType: Bug ApportVersion: 2.20.11-0ubuntu27.10 Architecture: amd64 CasperMD5CheckResult: skip CurrentDesktop: ubuntu:GNOME DisplayManager: gdm3 DistroRelease: Ubuntu 20.04 InstallationDate: Installed on 2020-10-10 (12 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 20.04 - Release amd64 NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia_modeset nvidia Package: gnome-shell 3.36.4-1ubuntu1~20.04.2 PackageArchitecture: amd64 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 5.4.0-52.57-generic 5.4.65 RelatedPackageVersions: mutter-common 3.36.6-1ubuntu0.20.04.2 Tags: third-party-packages focal Uname: Linux 5.4.0-52-generic x86_64 UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) UserGroups: adm cdrom dip lpadmin lxd plugdev sambashare sudo _MarkForUpload: True To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1901017/+subscriptions -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~desktop-packages Post to : [email protected] Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~desktop-packages More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
