  My setup:  Sapphire 2600 XT AGP + Compaq P1100 monitor (maximux resolution 
supported  1920x1440) connected via DVI port

  Maximum default resolution "2048 x 1600" reported, is wrong for Compaq
  P1100 monitor and i tried to delete with the command:

  $ xrandr --delmode DVI-0 2048x1536
