  clock-applet crashed with SIGSEGV in claim_op()

Bug description:
  I am running Ubuntu MATE 20.04 64 bit in an older Dell 830 laptop.
  Yesterday evening I updated the system. Upon opening the laptop lid
  this morning, I received a notice that clock had quit unexpectedly.
