Old version of gedit that installed by default in Ubuntu 18.04.3 clean install just done today allows saving a file or "save as" to any directory. Snap version of "Text Editor" which purports to be gedit version 3.32.0 can't save a file anywhere I've tried. The error is that I don't have permission even though I do have permission to Read AND Write files in the directories I've tried.
Thinking that there may have been conflict, I uninstalled "old gedit" via sudo apt remove gedit, then uninstalled and reinstalled "New gedit" aka "Text Editor" from the Ubuntu Software app. No improvement. FWIW if it's supposed to be gedit call it gedit. Look at VLC for an example of old version and new snap version both listed and installable in the Ubuntu Software store. Choose the version you want. It's a new VERSION with a new install source not a new App. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gedit in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1300004 Title: gedit does not elevate privileges while it's being launched Status in gedit package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: When I run gedit as normal user and try to change some file inside a system (for example, /etc/fstab) it doesn't allow me to write changes directly to that file. Instead, I can save file in my home directory, then move it on the right place with sudo mv. Other option is to copy it's content inside clipboard, relaunch gedit as root, then paste and save in appropriate place. These paths are not convenient, because I have to do a lot of unnecessary work, searching for the file twice or typing it's location into terminal. Imagine a situation when file cannot be saved and gedit asks for root password and escalates privileges automatically so we can now write directly to that file. Kedit can do this. Can we embed such functionality inside gedit?
