These servers reside on the same subnet. There are no error messages to speak of; the connections just time out. This is not a firewall problem. I have verified that I can connect to the POP and SMTP servers using telnet. I did this from a terminal window on the same machine and as the same user as the one that cannot get Thunderbird to work, using commands like telnet popserver 110 and telnet smtpserver 25. Tracing with tcpdump confirms that no traffic is actually exchanged with the servers: there is no attempt at establishing a TCP connection. This is with Thunderbird freshly installed on Precise. It was not installed prior to the upgrade to Precise. There was no .thunderbird directory in my home directory. I was using Seamonkey before the upgrade and got Thunderbird to import everything from Seamonkey upon first use.
