Public bug reported: [This is a new report to reflect latest information, considering previous issue report was submitted two cycles ago]
Opening the Applications Overview (App Grid) displays a janky animation. Seemingly worse depending on number of application icons being displayed, this issue will also instantly cause 2 CPU spikes. Differing hardware configurations will see more/less pronounced results; however, it is present to some extent on nearly every machine. It will happen regardless of using the default XOrg or Wayland. This bug is worse on lower-powered machines, with a 2014 Celeron CPU taking a 65-70% hit with no other applications open. Work is being done upstream to squash this very complex bug. https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/issues/349 https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/issues/233 https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/issues/232 ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 18.10 Package: gnome-shell 3.30.1-2ubuntu1 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 4.18.0-10.11-generic 4.18.12 Uname: Linux 4.18.0-10-generic x86_64 ApportVersion: 2.20.10-0ubuntu13 Architecture: amd64 CurrentDesktop: ubuntu:GNOME Date: Tue Oct 23 19:20:44 2018 DisplayManager: gdm3 GsettingsChanges: b'org.gnome.shell' b'command-history' redacted by apport b'org.gnome.shell' b'app-picker-view' b'uint32 1' b'org.gnome.desktop.interface' b'gtk-im-module' b"'gtk-im-context-simple'" InstallationDate: Installed on 2018-10-23 (0 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 18.10 "Cosmic Cuttlefish" - Release amd64 (20181017.3) ProcEnviron: PATH=(custom, no user) XDG_RUNTIME_DIR=<set> LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash SourcePackage: gnome-shell UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) ** Affects: gnome-shell (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Confirmed ** Affects: mutter (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Confirmed ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug cosmic ** Also affects: mutter (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Changed in: gnome-shell (Ubuntu) Status: New => Confirmed ** Changed in: mutter (Ubuntu) Status: New => Confirmed ** Description changed: [This is a new report to reflect latest information, considering previous issue report was submitted two cycles ago] Opening the Applications Overview (App Grid) displays a janky animation.
