The ppd is "/etc/cups/ppd/DESKJET-830C.ppd." It is connected via USB to the computer running Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS Precise Pangola AMD64. When attempting to print files (I tried .pdf's and .doc's) with the option "OutputMode=NormalGray," "lpstat -l" returns the status "/usr/lib/cups/filter/hpcups failed." This problem only occurs with the option above; with "OutputMode=DraftGray," "OutputMode=DraftRGB," and "OutputMode=NormalRGB" the printer works fine. The command "dpkg -S /usr/lib/cups/filter/hpcups" reports that this file is part of the printer-driver-hpcups package. The package version is 3.12.2-1ubuntu3.1. I think it was updated recently along with hplip and printer-driver-postscript-hp, both to version 3.12.2-1ubuntu3.1, and libcups2:i386 to version 1.5.3-0ubuntu4. Unfortunately, I do not know when they were updated, from which versions they were updated, or when the last time the printer worked properly, although it did at one point.
