I solved it by installing gnome Tweak and selecting the Desktop tab the
last option "Show Mounted volumes on the desktop"

I have not really found an error that causes this.

The error occurred after a failure of recording on a blank disc, I could
not mount the disk again and moments later I error appeared.

Title:
Removable drives mount but don't appear on desktop (Hoary)

Status in “gnome-vfs2” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
As per subject line, removable drives (in my case a USB flash drive and an
ipod)
mount fine and I can browse them by using the window that pops up when I plug
in
the drive or by going through /media, but the icons no longer appear on the
desktop. I'm using Hoary with the latest updates as of time of posting.
