If the lid is left open, the external monitor goes to sleep as it should. To reproduce: 1. Set "Do nothing" for "When laptop lid is closed". If it's not listed, see here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1319921 2. Set "Put display to sleep when inactive" to 0:01. 3. Disable screensaver if it's enabled. 4. Close the laptop lid. 5. Wait a few minutes. Nothing happens. If however the laptop lid is open, the monitor goes to sleep as it should.
