Also on upgrade from 17.04 to 17.10  KDE.  In addition, I was running in
a console, as X showed only the mouse cursor, xosview, and otherwise a
black screen.  I was hoping to finish the upgrade before troubleshooting
the black screen.  Trying the suggestion in comment #7 just got the same
error.
