I'm now using only Linux Mint and I don't quite understand what version
of gedit I'm supposed to have.

Synaptic says latest and installed version is gedit_2.30.5+qiana.

Linux Mint website says: Qiana (3.10.4-0ubuntu4)
https://community.linuxmint.com/software/view/gedit

And gedit says: gedit - Version 2.30.4

So, in short the version numbering is so fucked up, it is impossible to
say what I have installed from the repo.

What comes to the bug, it is now different; gedit freezes when opening
that file.
