Thank you for reporting this bug to Ubuntu. Ubuntu 13.10 (saucy) reached end-of-life on July 17, 2014.
See this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases We appreciate that this bug may be old and you might not be interested in discussing it any more. But if you are then please upgrade to the latest Ubuntu version and re-test. ** Changed in: pulseaudio (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to pulseaudio in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1246478 Title: No playback sound / Cannot un-mute speaker playback Status in pulseaudio package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: Since 12.04 upgrade and continuing with 13.10, gnome-alsamixer, alsamixer, and xfce4-mixer cannot un-mute playback speakers although the apps suggest they have been unmuted. I have an HDA Intel sound card (ALC883). Alsamixergui is the only one that works by clicking the speaker icons at the top to make them green. When I unmute using the other apps, in Alsamixergui the speakers stay white signifying that the playback is not actually unmuted and the sound does not work. This is fairly critical and was reported for 12.04: no sound, no music, not Skype, etc. I hope this is going to be fixed. Not sure if it is actually the apps' fault or pulseaudio's. Please forward as appropriate. This is just another thing that tell people loudly to STAY AWAY FROM UBUNTU!
