I have the same phenomena upon installation of Inkscape. This is what I did: 1. click .ai file and said from nautilus that "You need to install application to open this file". 2. Showed two applications. I chose Inkscape. 3. Installation started. Affiliated packages as well.
After I tried to open inkscape, I found the following message. inkscape: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux- gnu/libgiomm-2.4.so.1: undefined symbol: _ZN4Glib11VariantTypeD1Ev -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to inkscape in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1630077 Title: Inkscape doesn't open ubuntu 16.04 libgiomm-2.4.so.1 Status in inkscape package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: I am using ubuntu 16.04.
