The problem is that in the character table, only the currently selected character is visible, whereas all other characters are displayed as white glyphs on white background, therefore, are invisible. I'm attaching a screenshot with this effect visible. You can observe that U+0034 DIGIT FOUR is the character currently selected, and it is the only one that can be seen in the table. I'm running Xubuntu 16.04.1 LTS. The theme I'm using is called Add- Waiter (which is basically a dark-by-default version of Adwaita), and the version number of gucharmap is visible in the About dialog (exact version of the package is 1:3.18.2-1ubuntu1).
