I'm using Xubuntu 14.04. I solves the problem by setting /Net/EnableInputFeedbackSounds and /Net/EnableInputFeedbackSounds to true. By default their values are false. You can do this in setting manager or in terminal. xfconf-query -c xsettings -p /Net/EnableEventSounds -s true xfconf-query -c xsettings -p /Net/EnableInputFeedbackSounds -s true I'm not sure if this applies to other Ubuntu flavours.
