my spike branch that averts the problem is here, based on 0.17.1: lp:~kdub/mir/0.17.1-fix-1406725 This branch doesnt have unit tests, and needs a bit more work on the new internal interfaces, so I'll probably have to rework the branch to get it to land in lp:mir.
