This wors! sudo apt-get remove network-manager Once this is done, be sure to restore /etc/resolv.conf to it's proper state /etc/init.d/networking restart Viola! Reboots work too (of course). Here's the only catch I can see so far. You'll find under SystemSettings-->Network an unhappy face. Contrary to appearances, that is REALLY GOOD NEWS ;-) Getting rid of that nasty network-manager puts you back in control of your system's networking configuration (as per all the usual Linux conventions). So far, there doesn't appear to be very many dependencies upon network-manager elsewhere in Ubuntu. There's no guarantee that this will always remain true. I may not have yet stumbled upon some of the network-manager dependencies. Ubuntu is a rich desktop environment - so the clear and present danger of network-manager might not be reason enough to throw out the baby with the bath water. So far, Ubuntu seems to allow the removal of network-manager without much in the way of cascading consequences. A tiny modicum of additional logic might permit network-manager to peacefully co-exist with any manually set networking configuration - that any given end-user might need. Please let Ubuntu know that network-manager needs a (hopefully) tiny, additional dose of logic! -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to network-manager in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/839836 Title: resolv.conf empty when running in debug Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: When running network manager in debug mode, the resolv.conf stays empty: jean-louis@laptop-jl:~$ cat /etc/resolv.conf # Generated by NetworkManager ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 11.10 Package: network-manager 0.9.0-0ubuntu2 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.0.0-9.15-generic 3.0.3 Uname: Linux 3.0.0-9-generic x86_64 Architecture: amd64 CRDA: Error: [Errno 2] Bestand of map bestaat niet Date: Fri Sep 2 21:20:28 2011 IfupdownConfig: auto lo iface lo inet loopback InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 11.10 "Oneiric Ocelot" - Alpha amd64 (20110705.1) IpRoute: default via 192.168.3.1 dev eth0 proto static 169.254.0.0/16 dev eth0 scope link metric 1000 192.168.3.0/24 dev eth0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.3.127 192.168.3.0/24 dev wlan0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.3.101 192.168.122.0/24 dev virbr0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.122.1 NetworkManager.state: [main] NetworkingEnabled=true WirelessEnabled=true WWANEnabled=true WimaxEnabled=true ProcEnviron: PATH=(custom, no user) LANG=nl_BE.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash SourcePackage: network-manager UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/839836/+subscriptions -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~desktop-packages Post to : desktop-packages@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~desktop-packages More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
