Public bug reported: I intend to use Eclipse with Oracle JDK. However, after installed Oracle JDK from Web Upd8 PPA, apt-get still wants to install Open JDK as a dependency of Eclipse.
I then took a look at the dependencies among the packages, the current dependency chain appears to be like this: eclipse ->eclipse-jdt -> default-jre -> openjdk-7-jre openjdk-7-jre must 'provide' default-jre, as how oracle-java7-installer does, instead of being a dependency of it. To reproduce: $ sudo apt-add-repository ppa:webupd8team/java $ sudo apt-get update $ sudo apt-get install oracle-java7-set-default $ sudo apt-get install eclipse $ sudo dpkg-query -W -f='${Status}\n' openjdk-7-jre Expected: $ sudo dpkg-query -W -f='${Status}\n' openjdk-7-jre unknown ok not-installed Actual: $ sudo dpkg-query -W -f='${Status}\n' openjdk-7-jre install ok installed ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 14.10 Package: eclipse (not installed) ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.16.0-30.40-generic 3.16.7-ckt3 Uname: Linux 3.16.0-30-generic x86_64 ApportVersion: 2.14.7-0ubuntu8.1 Architecture: amd64 CurrentDesktop: Unity Date: Tue Feb 3 16:10:23 2015 EcryptfsInUse: Yes InstallationDate: Installed on 2015-01-27 (6 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 14.10 "Utopic Unicorn" - Release amd64 (20141022.1) SourcePackage: eclipse UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) ** Affects: eclipse (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug utopic -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to eclipse in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1417434 Title: Eclipse Must Not Depend on OpenJDK Status in eclipse package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: I intend to use Eclipse with Oracle JDK.
