At least in ubuntu 14.04 (with Xfce) you don't need to be superuser to run setxkbmap -option "nbsp:none" I run this as an autostarted application to avoid trouble.

Same thing with less command: $ lspci | less bash: less: command not found $ less Missing filename ("less --help" for help) I expect exactly same looking command lines work same way.
