I have tha same (1440, gamma, fglrx removed) with Radeon HD 4850, but only on
upgraded ubuntu from 12.04 to 14.04 (both LTS) .
With "14.04.1 LTS desktop live" I have correct resolution:
root@ubuntu:~# xrandr -q
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1920 x 1080, maximum 8192 x 8192
HDMI-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
VGA-0 connected primary 1920x1080+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y
axis) 477mm x 268mm
   1920x1080 60.0*+
   1680x1050 60.0
   1280x1024 60.0
   1440x900 59.9
   1280x960 60.0
   1280x800 59.8
   1024x768 60.0
   800x600 60.3 56.2
   640x480 60.0
DVI-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

[Radeon HD 4850]

On the upgraded version I have to use -q12 and -s to see 1920x1080, but can't
add it - gamma "missing".
As there is no xorg.conf, it is hard to move settings ...
It looks, as always, the best way to upgrade ubuntu is to reinstall ubuntu. I
think to install all packages from "live" distribution missing in the installed
version, as it is all autodiscovery, but I feel I will have to reinstall it.
But if installed ubuntu has different autodiscovery settings compared to the
live version, maybe someone knows, how to change it?

Title:
Cannot set screen resolution above 1400x1050

Status in “xserver-xorg-video-ati” package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
Since installing Ubuntu 14.04, I have not been able to adjust the display
resolution to 1920x1080.
My current Ubntu version is Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS.
My video card is an AMD/ATI RV710, which displayed at high resolution with
Ubuntu 12.04.
The Ubuntu 14.04 open-source driver showed options between 640x400 and
1280x1024. I tried the proprietary driver, which set the resolution at
1400x1050 with no other options. I tried to remove the proprietary driver, but
rebooting has me stuck at 1400x1050.
