Public bug reported: I've been using Ubuntu 14.10 for a while now, and I ended up switching to the FGLRX driver for performance reasons. My laptop is an Acer Aspire 5742G-7353 with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 video chip on it. I have noticed that some applications (So far, I've only seen Blender and Chromium do this) displays a little bit (maybe 10-20 pixels?) to the right when maximized.
