Thanks for your help and suggestions, Graham. I hope someone is able to progress this further as mine did not work with a PAE kernel. (Yes, I noted the Lubuntu-fake-PAE option...)

On modem initialization it sets text mode instead of PDU mode for SMS, but newer modems can't work in this mode. I understand the GUI works well and has been introduced into Saucy Salamander and later versions, but Modem Manager versions 0.6 or later has not yet been made available for 12.04 LTS users which enables its SMS functions etc to work. It is hoped that an updated version of Modem Manager that addresses this and other bug fixes can be introduced into 12.04 LTS very soon for users like myself who have been looking out patiently for a couple of years for this functionality.
