Public bug reported: Ok, so since the new lockscreen landed in Trusty, I've been observing inconsistent behavior with the power settings on my screens. I managed to do a little bit of troubleshooting and this is what I discovered:
My power settings are set such that the screens turn off prior to the screen locking (5 minutes and 10 minutes respectively but I don't think the times are relevant). If I walk away from my computer and leave it unlocked, the screens will successfully power down, and the next time I come back then the lock screen will appear when I wake up the screens. This part is good. If I type Ctrl-Alt-L, the screen locks, but it keeps the screens on, even for extended periods of time (eg, overnight. On several occaisions I've locked my screen, gone to bed, and then woken up to discover both my screens powered on at maximum brightness just displaying that sexy lockscreen). Oddly, when I unlock the screens in this state, what will happen is that just a few seconds after unlocking, some kind of timer will trigger and say "oh yeah, time to power down the screens!" so even though I *just unlocked my desktop*, both screens power down for about 5 seconds and then turn back on, and *then* they "fade to black" and snap back to maximum brightness. It's very discordant. So, the workaround for me is "don't lock the screen", and that's probably fine at home, but obviously that's not a viable solution in any kind of security context, eg in an office.
