This is still happening regularly a year later. Is this really difficult
to resolve, or do none of the Unity developers dogfood Ubuntu anymore?

Title:
Every thunderbird update requires locking a new entry to the launcher
  and removing the old one

Status in Unity:
  New
Status in “thunderbird” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Every time Thunderbird is updated (it seems), the Thunderbird Mail
launcher that is pinned (or "locked") to my Unity launcher stops
working correctly --- it still launches Thunderbird, but instead of
the launcher icon changing to show that the program is running, a
*new*, identical launcher entry appears at the bottom of the launcher.

To get normal behavior back, I then have to right click on this new
launcher entry, choose "Lock to Launcher", right click on the old
launcher, choose "Unlock from Launcher", then drag the new icon to the
place in the panel where the old one was.

This is silly. (Imagine if Windows 7 users had to do this every time
there was patch for Outlook or IE...)

Feel free to reassign to the thunderbird package if that *really* is
where the fix needs to go...

I'm running quantal, but this has been happening as long as I can
remember, at least as far back as precise...
