I also saw "Items in the trash may not be modified". Copying it instead
of restoring the original worked.

Something is really messed up if it thinks restoring is illegally
modifying trash files.

Title:
can't restore files in subfolders in trash via drag'n'drop

Status in “gvfs” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: nautilus

  steps to reproduce:

  - goto Desktop
  - create a Folder
  - create an empty file in this new folder
  - delete (move to trash) the created folder

  - open trash > open the created folder
  - grab the file with the mouse and release it on the desktop

  The following error message appears:
  Error while moving "new file".
There was an error moving the file into /home/ubuntu/Desktop.
  - Items in the trash may not be modified

If you COPY the file, it works.

(I filed this bug, because I think the shown procedure is very
  intuitive.)
