To work around this problem, if I remember correctly:
- run apt-get install xorg, then it will complain about xserver-xorg, 
- run apt-get xserver-xorg, then it will complain about some <obscure_package>
- run apt-get <obscure_package>, this time it will ask you to replace some 
packages, say yes
- install xserver-xorg
- install xorg
