Laszlo Kajan, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .
If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report: apport-collect -p xserver-xorg-video-nouveau REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER Please note, given that the information from the prior release is already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one would not be helpful. Thank you for your understanding. Nothing shows up in dmesg (or in the X log) at the default debugging level, when the display is connected via the long cable. When a shorter VGA cable is used, the display is detected correctly. The VGA cable is attached to a DP->VGA converter connected to the mini display port of the computer. In OSX, the display is detected (and used) on both cables correctly, therefore the physical connection to the display in itself is not responsible for the problem. The NVIDIA Linux driver does detect the display on the long VGA cable, but allows only lower than preferred resolution. The short cable works correctly with the NVIDIA Linux driver. xrandr shows after connecting the display via the long cable: DP-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) I can not force the display on with: xrandr --newmode "1024x768@70.1" 76.27 1024 1080 1192 1360 768 769 772 800 -HSync +Vsync xrandr --addmode DP-1 1024x768@70.1 xrandr --output DP-1 --mode 1024x768@70.1 (this mode is valid for the display), I get: xrandr: Configure crtc 1 failed and in X.log: [ 1140.552] (II) NOUVEAU(0): EDID vendor "APP", prod id 40137 [ 1140.552] (II) NOUVEAU(0): Printing DDC gathered Modelines: [ 1140.552] (II) NOUVEAU(0): Modeline "1280x800"x0.0 72.50 1280 1328 1360 1440 800 803 809 823 -hsync -vsync (50.3 kHz) [ 1140.786] (EE) NOUVEAU(0): failed to set mode: Invalid argumentresize called 1280 800 ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 12.04 Package: xorg 1:7.6+12ubuntu1 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.2.0-35.55-generic 3.2.34 Uname: Linux 3.2.0-35-generic x86_64 NonfreeKernelModules: wl .tmp.unity.support.test.0: ApportVersion: 2.0.1-0ubuntu17.1 Architecture: amd64 CompizPlugins: [core, composite, opengl, compiztoolbox, decor, imgpng, vpswitch, snap, regex, mousepoll, gnomecompat, animation, move, workarounds, place, firepaint, resize, session, wall, ezoom, staticswitcher, fade, scale] CompositorRunning: compiz Date: Sat Jan 12 16:45:57 2013 DistUpgraded: 2012-06-15 08:35:37,791 DEBUG enabling apt cron job DistroCodename: precise DistroVariant: ubuntu ExtraDebuggingInterest: Yes, GraphicsCard: NVIDIA Corporation Device [10de:08a0] (rev a2) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) Subsystem: Apple Inc.
