I had this problem on GIMP 2.6.12 too. This version is not supported any
more from the GIMP developers. Would it be possible for you to try the
latest GIMP version (ppa here: https://launchpad.net/~otto-
kesselgulasch/+archive/gimp)? Thank you very much!

  gimp does not have close button in window title

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  attaching screenshot. you see there is no close/minimize/maximize
  button near mouse pointer. so I cannot close the window. workaround to
  unmaximize window and close. or to choose quit from application menu.

  Ubuntu 12.04.3 with Unity 3d
