Similar problem on Acer Aspire 3830T
Sound does not work on headphones/speakers in ubuntu.
When pluggine/unplugging the power cord all sound (not just beep) works for 1
sec
Sound works in Windows 7
Sometimes when rebooting Windows 7 a few times sound is left in a "good" state
and ubuntu will work (and continue to work until booting into Windows again)
The solution seems to be this:
open HDA_analyzer (http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/HDA_Analyzer)
In codec-0 outdir[0] and enable[0] must be unchecked
