This bug is two years old. Unity refuses to run on my 13.10 laptop, so
I'm using Gnome Shell and I'm getting hit with this bug. Are there
alternatives for added a printer?

Bug description:
  When using Gnome Shell it is not possible to install a network
  printer. When using Unity there are no problem.
