Does this bug happen on 12.04.1 or 12.04.3? Steps says 12.04.3 but Installation
media says it's 12.04.1.
If it's 12.04.3, this could be i915 issue, can you please try 13.10 and see if
the problem exists?

Title:
[Dell Latitude E6440] No display on external monitor with HDMI / VGA
  on Precise

Status in “xserver-xorg-video-intel” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  CID: 201306-13688 Dell Latitude

External monitor does not work on Precise

  Steps:
  1. Install 12.04.3 + update, boot to desktop
  2. Insert a HDMI / VGA cable

  Expected result:
Mirrored (or extended) desktop should be displayed on external monitor.

  Actual result:
Nothing happened with HDMI / VGA cable plugged, the external monitor was not
detected
in "Display" applet, the monitor itself still in idle mode.

I tried to reduce the resolution, but there is only one "1600x900"
  option available.
