Had a non-fatal GPU hang (possibly a different issue), but when I tried
to cat the file I got:

cat: /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state: Cannot allocate memory

The kernel also syslogged detailed information about this. Presumably
it's kernel memory that can't be allocated, since the system has plenty
of free RAM, not to mention swap.

I've reset the i915_error_state and subsequent cats succeed, though of
course the state is empty. I'll need to restart X now, as it's switched
to an unaccelerated mode. Will update if I see the parent crash bug
again.

Title:
Xorg i915 hangcheck hung GPU after workspace switch

Status in “xserver-xorg-video-intel” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
Running 13.04 raring with latest updates, but this kind of GPU freeze
has occurred numerous times in the past year.

It always occurs when the system is under high CPU and I/O load, e.g.
after resuming from sleep. Memory is not a factor, as there are
  gigabytes of free memory.

The most reliable way to trigger this crash is to rapidly switch
between workspaces, while the system is heavily loaded.

i915_error_state from immediately following the crash is attached.
